April 2010: New dvd ...

The first in a series of Martial Arts for Football DVD’s is released. The Art of Getting “Skinny”: How to Get Past Your Opponent Without Being Touched.

January 2010

Resumed training with Lee Catling, an old friend and Brazilian Jiu-Jjitsu (BJJ) instructor under Braulio Estima, world champion in BJJ. Lee shared some revolutionary Defensive Line techniques ultimately to be released in the DVD “How to Successfully Wrestle and Manipulate Your Opponent on the Playing Field”.

November 2009

Brand new Strength and Conditioning centre opens at the University of East London with Coach Bourne playing a pivotal role in designing and implementing training programs for football and rugby players, fencers and elite sprinters in the build up to the 2012 Olympic Games. The Games will be held just around the corner to the University, in Stratford, East London.

May 2009

Returned to Austin, Texas to receive Doctoral degree. Once again visited with Coach Jeff “Mad Dog” Madden and the rest of the University of Texas weight room staff to exchange ideas on the evolution of martial arts training to football.

October 2008-2009

Renewed acquaintance with Dave Barham coach with the Essex Spartans tootball team and former Head Coach of the Essex Sabres football team. Helped the Spartans and Head Coach Dean Gibson prepare for the 2008-2009 season.

July 2008

On a return trip to Austin for a successful defense of my PhD, I visited with Coach Jeff “Mad Dog” Madden and the rest of the University of Texas weight room staff.

January 2008

Returned to UK to be closer to family and to finish PhD and resume training with Master James Sinclair of the United Kingdom Wing Chun Association.

April 28-29, 2007: NFL DRAFT

Twenty-six players drafted from Athletes’ Performance in Tempe, Arizona, ten of whom were drafted in the first round, including the #1 pick, JaMarcus Russell.

January 2007: ATHLETES' PERFORMANCE

Began internship followed by full-time employment at the world renowned Athletes’ Performance as a Performance Coach working with a variety of athletes including football, hockey, baseball, golf, soccer and mixed martial arts.

October 1, 2006: BRAND NEW WEBSITE ...

After initially being exposed to the similarities between football and the martial arts and then formulating, practicing and refining multiple ideas and techniques, the project has finally come to fruition.

However, this is only the beginning. Martial arts training has tremendous potential to improve various aspects of football; including striking, avoiding and blocking strikes, wrestling and grappling, joint control, drive blocking, breakfalling (falling to the ground safely) and conditioning (speed, strength, stamina, skill levels and flexibility).

July 5, 2006:

On a trip back to Essex, England I consulted with Lee Catling of Shen-Ti martial arts. Lee is an old friend, sparring partner and now professional martial artist and mixed martial arts competitor. We discussed and practiced the use of additional revolutionary wrestling and grappling drills that can be applied to the game of football.

March 22, 2006: Attended pro-timing day

Rod performed very well and was selected in the seventh round of the 2006 NFL draft by the Miami Dolphins.

March 20, 2006:

Helped Rod Wright prepare for pro-timing day by working on specific blocking, wrestling and grappling drills. Fortunately, some NFL scouts are aware of the fact that you cannot measure everything in terms of 40-yard dash times or how many times you can perform a 225lb bench press strength endurance test. A key component to the success of any defensive lineman is the ability to skillfully evade, block and wrestle with an opponent. These skills cannot be measured by a field test but will invariably mean the difference between defeating or being defeated by your opponent.

January 2006: Fast forward 8 years

What started as a simple idea has blossomed into an eight-year project involving thousands of hours of research and practice which is finally coming to fruition in the form of Martial Arts for Football.com.

June 1998: An idea is born

Began internship with the University of Texas Football team. Discovered at first hand the marked similarities between football and the martial arts. The idea for Martial Arts for Football is born.
