Madden has been honored by his peers as one of the nation's leading authorities on physical development and has recieved numerous awards during his coaching career. He was inducted into the USA Strength and Conditioning Coaches Hall of Fame in June 2003 and was named National Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year in 2004. A three-year letterwinner and 1983 graduate of Vanderbilt, Madden was a high school All-American in his hometown of Cleveland. After earning a degree in sociology with a minor in psychology and secondary education and a stint in the USFL, he served as both a graduate assistant football and strength & conditioning coach at the University of Cincinnati in 1983. BACKGROUND
He began his career in strength training and conditioning at Rice in 1984 and moved to Colorado in 1989. As assistant athletics director at CU, he coordinated strength and conditioning programs for all 15 of the Buffaloes' intercollegiate sports. Madden then joined the athletics staff at North Carolina following the 1992 season. Madden came to UT from North Carolina, where he served as associate athletics director for student-athlete development. At Carolina, he was responsible for 28 intercollegiate varsity sports and more than 750 student-athletes. HIGH HONORSMadden was one of just 10 coaches nationally to receive the title of Master Strength and Conditioning Coach at the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCA) convention in 2001. The honor represents what the association says "is the highest honor that can be achieved as a strength and conditioning coach and represents professionalism, knowledge, experience and expertise." He was recognized as a Master Elite Strength and Conditioning Coach by the association in 2000. He also was honored with the Culligan Holiday Bowl's Admiral U.S. Grant Sharp Trophy in 2000, which was voted on by the Longhorns team and is bestowed upon an individual that is dedicated to team success. Madden was certified in May 1991 by the International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA), recognizing him as one of the world leaders in the profession of sports development. He also was a unanimous selection to the ISSA Board of Directors. Recognized worldwide as an authority on explosive power training, Madden was named the National Strength and Conditioning Specialist of the Year in 1996 by the International Sports Sciences Association. In 1988, he was certified by the National Association of Speed and Explosion (NASE). Madden is a member of the board of directors of Peak Performance USA and is on the editorial advisory board of Sports Speed magazine. He also has a 602-pound bench press to his credit, making him one of the top bench pressers in the world. EXPLOSIVE POWER
The Longhorns strength and conditioning coach has played a critical role in the design and creation of some of the nation's leading collegiate strength and conditioning facilities. The Nassar Al-Rashid weight room is Madden's fourth facility, and it contains state-of-the-art, cutting-edge equipment that is user-friendly and second-to-none in design implementation. MARTIAL ARTSCoach Madden first began incorporating martial arts into his own football training in 1979. He has continued to incorporate martial arts training into the strength and conditioning programs of college football players for over twenty years. Included among his students are two Heisman Trophy winners — Rashaan Saalam of Colorado (1994) and Ricky Williams of Texas (1998), along with two runners up — Vince Young (2005) and Colt McCoy (2008). He has also worked with two Walter Camp Football Foundation Players of the Year, two Nagurski Trophy winners, (nation’s top defensive player), two Thorpe Award winners (nation's outstanding defensive back), two Butkus Award winners (nation's top linebacker), two Doak Walker Award winners (nation’s top running back), along with winners of the Lombardi Award (nation’s top lineman), the Hendricks Award (nation’s top defensive end), the Manning Award and the Davey O’Brien Award for the nation’s top quarterback.
