Nick's martial arts journey began 30 years ago when, at the age of 14, he was inspired to take up Shotokan Karate. Earning his black belt at age 18, he followed the Shotokan training for the next 12 years. While studying karate he taught at both Liverpool and Loughborough Universities. In 1991 he wandered into a Wing Chun Kwoon (Training Hall) and discovered the dynamic art of Wing Chun Kung Fu. Wing Chun Kung Fu is the style made famous by the late Bruce Lee. After being humbled in a number of his own deficiencies, he began studying Wing Chun Kung Fu under the tutelage of Sifu (Teacher) Mark Phillips and Master James Sinclair in London and Essex, England respectively. In 1995 he became an Assistant Instructor for the United Kingdom Wing Chun Kung Fu Association (UKWCKFA) and in 1998 he became an Instructor in his own right, teaching in Essex, England and later in Austin, Texas. NEW FOCUS
In 1997 he made a conscious career decision to switch focus from physical therapy to performance sport and returned to the United States to finish his Master’s Degree at the University of Texas. There he volunteered as an Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach with Womens' Athletics and the Longhorn Football Team. It was while interning with the Longhorn Football Team that he discovered at first hand the marked similarities between the martial arts and football. In 1998 he returned to England for one year where he worked in professional soccer and volunteered as a Strength and Conditioning Coach to the Southend Sabers (American) Football Team, helping them to their best season ever. In 1999 he returned to the University of Texas to pursue a Doctoral Degree and in 2000 and 2001 was employed as a Graduate Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach assisting with Football, Baseball, Swimming and Track and Field. His responsibilities included assisting with all aspects of Strength and Conditioning including the teaching of martial arts — on occasions to the whole football team. In 2003 and 2004 he demonstrated his Martial Arts skills at the Texas High School Football Coaches Clinic and was employed as the Martial Arts Consultant to the University of Texas Longhorn Football team. During 2003-2004, he was also employed as an Assistant Track and Field coach and physical therapist to a number of elite track and field sprinters. During that time period he worked with Obadale Thompson, Olympic bronze medalist in the 100 meters (2000 Olympics), Olympic finalist in the 2004 Olympics, and former holder of the fastest time ever recorded by a human being in the 100 meters — 9.69 seconds (wind aided). He currently works with a multitude of elite athletes including football players and sprinters/fencers preparing for the 2012 Olympics.
